Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

(1) Boom Control Valve
Open the cover to access the main control valve.
Open the hydraulic tank cap to release the hydraulic system pressure.
Find the boom control valve (1) location. Clean around the control valves to prevent contamination to the hydraulic system.

Remove two bolts (2) with a 5mm HEX Allen wrench. Existing bolts can be reused. Keep bolts for reuse in a later step.
Remove two washers (3). Existing washers can be reused. Keep washers for reuse in a later step.

(4) 6V-5586 O-Ring Seal (5) Pilot Cap
Remove the pilot cap (5) and the seal (4) from the control valve body. The removed pilot cap and the seal must be kept to reuse in a later step.

Clean the new 479-0589 Spool Kit for replacement.
Remove the current spool (7) from the control valve body. Retainer (6) may remain in place.Note: To discriminate between the removed spool and the replacement spool, add any tag to the removed spool.Note: Prior to installing new spool, verify retainer (6) and o-rings (4), (8), and (9) are present and not damaged. Replace the o-rings if damaged.

Reinstall seals (8) and (9), and spool retainer (6). Verify part number of new spool (10). Install the spool (10) which was cleaned in Step 7 to the control valve.Note: Handle components carefully to avoid damage.Note: Step 8 through 9 should be applied as soon as possible.

Reinstall the pilot cap (5) and the seal (4) which were removed at 6 to the control valve body.
Install bolts (2) with washers (3). Torque bolts to 9.5
