Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine on a level surface and stop the engine. Make sure that the transmission control is in the PARK position.

The tire and the wheel on the right front is removed for ease of viewing.
Open access cover (1).
Replace steering case drain oil filter (2).
Remove the steering case drain oil filter. Properly discard the used filter element. Clean the filter mounting base. Make sure that the old filter seal is removed.
Lubricate the seal of the new filter with clean oil.
Install the new steering case drain oil filter by hand until the seal contacts the filter mounting base. Note the position of the index marks on the filter in relation to a fixed point on the mounting base. Note: There are rotation index marks on each filter that is spaced 90 degrees (1/4 turn) away from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
Tighten all filters according to the instructions that are printed on the filter. For non-Cat filters, use the instructions that are provided with the filter. Note: A strap type wrench or a suitable tool may be needed in order to turn the filter the amount required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.
Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle. Check the filter for leaks and make necessary repairs.
Check the oil level in the steering hydraulic tank. If necessary, add oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering System Oil Level - Check" for more information.
