Updating the engine software on C11 S/N:KCA and on C13 S/N:KCB Truck Engines may cause a J1939 Device Not Responding (231-12) diagnostic code. This may be caused by the October 2007 software release, which includes a dedicated switch input for the parking brake signal. A loss of battery power after updating the software may cause the Engine Control Module (ECM) to reprogram the parking brake switch parameter to the default setting of "J1939 Input". The current version of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 2008A does not recognize the parking brake switch configuration parameter.Solution
If you have an October 2007 318-XXXX software version and have a Check Engine Light (CEL) on with a J1939 Device Not Responding (231-12) active diagnostic code, flash a December 2006 307-xxxx software version. Verify that the code is gone and that the CEL is out. No other troubleshooting is needed to resolve this issue.A future release of Cat (ET) will allow the technician to resolve this issue.Table 1 shows the old software part number that should be used with the current software that is on your engine.
