PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR REWORKING 0R0805 AND 0R0807 WATER PUMPS IN DEALER PARTS STOCK

The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program.Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
TERMINATION DATE

PROBLEM
The impeller shaft joint needs to be inspected on certain 0R0805 and 0R0807 remanufactured water pumps in dealer parts stock. The retaining nut on these water pumps may not have been tightened to the corrrect torque. Additionally, the impeller bore taper may have an abnormality causing a "step" which prevents acceptable contact with the shaft.
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect all 0R0805 and 0R0807 Water Pumps in dealer parts stock with a date code prior to June 1, 2007.
The Date Code is formatted as DDMMYYXXX. DD = the day of the month. MM = the month of the year. YY = the year. XXX = plant number. For example, the Date Code 010607068 indicates a water pump manufactured on June 1, 2007 at plant number 068.
1. Remove the impeller.
2. If there is an visible line in the impeller bore, then replace the impeller. Refer to Image 1 of a defective impeller bore.
3. If this is not visible, then place blue dykem or similar coating on the shaft and rotate the impeller. If the contact surface area between the shaft and impeller is not at least 80%, then replace the 5L-8202 Impeller. Refer to Image 2 of a shaft with only 20% contact surface.
4. Secure the drive gear before you tighten the impeller retaining nut. Securing the drive gear will prevent the shaft from turning while the impeller retaining nut is being tightened. Make sure that the retaining nut is tightened to a torque of 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
