Cat® Data LinkThe CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is used by the Transmission ECM as a companion diagnostic code. The code is activated simultaneously with a diagnostic code from another control module to indicate that the Cat Data Link has an abnormal condition.The FMI 14 matches the FMI 14 activated by the control module. The FMI 14 diagnostic code means the Transmission ECM is communicating with another control module. However, the Transmission ECM is not receiving all of the expected information.The CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code will never be activated by the Transmission ECM as a stand-alone diagnostic code. The Transmission ECM will only activate the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code with one of the following module communication codes:CID 0590 FMI 14 - Engine ECMIf the Transmission ECM did not activate the companion diagnostic code CID 0248 FMI 14 along with the control module code, the technician would not know which data link circuit (Cat Data Link or J1939 Data Link) is involved.When the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated by the Transmission ECM, always look for one of the control module diagnostic codes that are listed above to troubleshoot the problem.Perform the following procedure when the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated. Verify that the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1.
