Table 1
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Monitor Active Engine Derate
If this application supports engine derates, use Cat Electronic Technician (ET) to check for logged derates.
Engine Derate
Result: Refer to troubleshooting with an event code.
A status flag will appear on Cat ET if the derate is active.
The engine speed might be limited due to one of the following conditions: high altitude, dirty air filters, and other factors.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Monitor the Cold Mode
Use Cat ET to verify that the engine has exited cold mode.
Cold Mode
Result: A status flag will appear if the engine is operating in cold mode, which may limit engine speed.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Monitor the Throttle Signal
Monitor the status for the "Throttle Position on Cat ET.
Throttle Position
Result: Verify that the status for "Throttle Position" is stable and that the engine is able to reach high idle speed.
Repair: If a problem is suspected with the throttle, refer to the appropriate troubleshooting procedure for troubleshooting the throttle signal.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
4. Monitor the Decelerator Pedal
Monitor the decelerator pedal on Cat ET.
Decelerator Pedal
Result:: Verify that the decelerator pedal is operating properly.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Deceleration Position Sensor Circuit - Test" for the proper troubleshooting procedure.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
5. Monitor the Intake Manifold (Boost) Pressure or Atmospheric Pressure
A. Monitor the status of "Fuel Position", "Rated Fuel Limit", and "FRC Fuel Limit" on Cat ET while the engine is operating under full load.
B. Monitor the status of the "Intake Manifold (Boost) Pressure" and "Atmospheric Pressure" for normal operation on Cat ET. Intake Manifold
Result: If the "Fuel Position" equals "Rated Fuel Limit" and "Fuel Position" is less than "FRC Fuel Limit", the electronics are operating correctly.
Result: When the engine is not running, the correct "Intake Manifold (Boost) Pressure" is 0 kPA (0 psi).
Verify that the intake manifold pressure sensor is operating properly.
6. Fuel Supply
A. Visually inspect the fuel lines for the following problems: restrictions, collapsed lines, and pinched lines.
B. Inspect the fuel tank for foreign objects which may block the fuel supply.
C. Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel.
D. Inspect the fuel pressure during engine cranking and also check the fuel pressure after the fuel filter.
Fuel System
Result: If problems are found with the fuel lines, repair the lines and/or replace the lines.
Repair: Prime the fuel system if any of the following procedures have been performed: Replacement of the fuel filter, Service on the low-pressure fuel supply circuit, Replacement of unit injectors.
Result: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for any fuel affects from the cold weather.
Result: Refer to the System Operation and Testing and Adjusting for inspecting fuel pressure.
Repair: If the fuel pressure is low, replace the fuel filters. If the fuel pressure is still low, check the following items:
