Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the right engine guard. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Side Guards - Remove and Install".
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin. At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Mark all hoses, lines, wires, and tubes for identification purposes. Cap all hoses, lines, and tubes in order to prevent foreign material from entering the system.Note: Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Drain the engine coolant from the radiator.

Remove oil filter (1) from the base.

Remove bolts and clips (2). Reposition wire harness (3). Cut all necessary wire straps.

Remove tube assembly (5) from the oil filter base.
Remove bolts (4). Remove the oil filter base from the engine block.

Remove fitting (6), plug (7), and plug (8) from the oil filter base.

Remove O-ring seal (9) from fitting (6) .
Remove O-ring seal (10) from plug (7) .
Remove spring (11) and valve (12) from the oil filter base.
Remove O-ring seal (13) from plug (8) .
Remove spring (14) and valve (15) from the oil filter base.
