5. While turning the steering wheel far enough to make a significant steering correction, observe the pressure gauge. The pressure should increase approximately 1378 kPa (200 psi). This increase in pressure indicates that the supplemental steering system is operating. If a minimum or no increase in pressure is shown, contact your Caterpillar dealer for adjustments or repairs to the system.6. Stop the machine and remove the pressure gauge from the supplemental steering system.Eight Speed Semi-automatic Transmission Operation
The eight speed semi-automatic transmission provides for full control of transmission reaction under all circumstances. Once acquainted with its features, the operator can match transmission performance to the variety of operation conditions normally encountered. Reverse, first and second speed forward are always torque converter drive. First and reverse must always be manually selected. The automatic range, third through eighth is direct drive. The transmission shifts up and down automatically between second and the highest speed selected. Select the highest usable speed for job conditions. Move the transmission control lever in one smooth motion. Manual shifting is not recommended during load, haul and dump cycles. Use the transmission hold switch to prevent unwanted shifts.
The machine must be stopped and the engine at LOW IDLE before changing direction or damage to the transmission can occur. After moving the transmission control lever, do not accelerate until after hearing or feeling the transmission clutches engage.
Upshifting
As the engine is accelerated and the ground speed increases, the transmission will upshift. As the ground speed continues to increase, the transmission will upshift one speed at a time. The transmission upshifts automatically between second and the highest speed selected. All upshifting will stop at the speed selected.Moving the transmission control lever to a higher speed while in motion will not cause an immediate upshift. Shifting is governed by the machine ground speed.Use the transmission hold switch to prevent unwanted upshifts when approaching an upgrade, or when loading or dumping on rough terrain.Downshifting
When ground and engine speed are reduced either by an increased load or deceleration, the transmission will automatically downshift to select the correct speed.
The transmission is equipped with a downshift inhibitor. The transmission will not necessarily downshift when the transmission control lever is moved. This protects against engine overspeed.Do not downshift with the transmission hold switch applied. The ground speed could decrease suddenly, or the engine could overspeed, when the hold switch is released.
Accidental movement of the transmission control lever to a lower speed, while traveling, will not force a sudden downshift. If the machine continues to slow, or is brought to a stop, the transmission will automatically downshift one speed at a time. It will return to second speed. Move the transmission control lever to NEUTRAL if stopped.Braking Operation
There are three separate controls used for the braking system. They are as follows.Service
