Information:

If equipped with an air inlet heater (AIH) for cold weather starting, do not use aerosal types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.
This diesel engine is equipped with an electric air intake heater system to aid cold weather starting and reduce white smoke.Do not spray ether into the air intake where it may come in contact with the heater elements. Use starting fluid only if the vehicle is equipped with the optional automatic ether injection system or immediate engine damage may result.
The engine start switch must be in the ON position and the engine must be running in order to maintain electrical functions and hydraulic functions. This procedure must be followed in order to prevent serious machine damage.

(3) Indicator for air inlet heater
If indicator (3) comes on, the temperature of the engine coolant is too low in order to allow the engine to start easily. To remedy this problem, the air inlet heater is activated. The air inlet heater will continue to heat the air inlet while the engine start switch is in the ON position. When indicator (3) turns off, the air inlet heater has finished heating the air inlet and the engine is ready to be started.
Turn engine speed dial (2) to speed position "5" or speed position "6".
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. If the engine does not start, allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. The engine start switch must be turned to the OFF position before trying to restart.
Turn engine start switch (1) to the START position.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts. To start the engine in temperatures below -18°C (0°F), the use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. One of the following may be required:
Coolant heater
Fuel heater
Extra battery capacity
Oil heaterTo start the engine in temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. Also see Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations", which is available from your Caterpillar dealer.
