Remove the tire and rim (rear). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove".
Remove the axle shaft and the sun gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Attach Tooling (A) to a suitable hoist. Use three 1F-7958 Nuts in order to attach Tooling (A) to planetary carrier (1).
Remove six bolts (2) and the washers in order to remove planetary carrier (1) and the O-ring seal from the wheel. The weight of planetary carrier (1) is 510 kg (1124.4 lb).
Position planetary carrier (1) onto a suitable work bench.
Remove three 1F-7958 Nuts in order to remove Tooling (A) from planetary carrier (1). Remove Tooling (A) from the hoist.

Attach Tooling (B) to a suitable hoist. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove inner carrier (3). The weight of inner carrier (3) is 137.5 kg (303 lb).
Position inner carrier (3) onto a suitable work bench. Remove Tooling (B) from inner carrier (3).

Remove bearing (4).

Use Tooling (B) in order to support ring gear (5) and ring gear (6), as shown.
Remove eight bolts (7), the washers and four retainers (8).
Use Tooling (B) in order to remove ring gear (5) and ring gear (6). The weight of ring gear (5) and ring gear (6) as a unit is 254 kg (560 lb).
Position ring gear (5) and ring gear (6) onto a suitable work bench.
Remove Tooling (B) from ring gear (5) and ring gear (6). Remove Tooling (B) from the hoist.
