Correct Gear Tooth Contact: Forward (Convex side of gear)
If the gear tooth contact pattern does not match Illustration 44 and Illustration 45, adjust shims (21) from Step 3 and shims (55) from Step 32 by the same number and size of shims in order to maintain the bearing preload.
If shims (55) and shims (62) were adjusted in order to correct the gear tooth contact pattern, Repeat Step 75 through Step 81 in order to recheck the backlash. Note: Several adjustments of shims (55) and shims (62) may be required before the backlash and the gear tooth contact pattern are correct. The backlash must be correct before the gear tooth contact pattern is checked. Any alteration of the backlash will change the gear tooth contact pattern.

Install shroud (1). Adjust shroud (1) in order to avoid interference with ring gear (47). Apply Tooling (M) onto bolts (4). Install bolts (4).
Torque bolts (15) for bearing cap (14) and torque bolts (16) for bearing cap (18) to 1600 150 N m (1180 110 lb ft).
Install 13 bolts (20). Apply Tooling (M) to the threads of bolts (20). Tighten 13 bolts (20) in a crisscross pattern. Torque 13 bolts (20) to 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft). Note: Apply Tooling (M) to the threads of four bolts (20) that were previously installed. Reinstall the four bolts (20). Torque the four bolts (20) to 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft).

Raise the temperature of outer bearing cone (29). Install outer bearing cone (29) in bearing flange (30). Note: Do not allow outer bearing cone (29) to cool.Note: Do not install shims (28) at this time.
Install retainer (27) and four bolts (26). Torque four bolts (26) to 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft). Note: Step 90 must be performed before outer bearing cone (29) has cooled.Note: Allow outer bearing cone (29) to cool.Note: Step 91 must be performed after outer bearing cone (29) has cooled.
Use a suitable lifting device in order to rotate the differential and bevel gear assembly to a vertical position. The gear teeth of the ring gear (47) must be oriented downward. The weight of the differential and bevel gear assembly is approximately 1050 kg (2315 lb). Remove four bolts (26) and retainer (27).

With the differential and bevel gear assembly in the vertical position, position retainer (27), as shown. Use Tooling (E) in order to measure the distance from the outer surface of retainer (27) to the flanged half of the differential housing. Take a measurement in two locations in a 180 degree pattern and average the measurements.

Use Tooling (F) in order to measure the thickness of retainer (27). Take a measurement in two locations in a 180 degree pattern and average the measurements.
