Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Make sure that no one is on the machine, underneath the machine or around the machine. Make sure that there are no personnel in the area.
Close the operator station door.
Adjust the operators seat.
Fasten the seat belt.Note: Before you start the engine, wait for the self-test of the Monitoring System. The self-test will activate when the engine start switch is turned to the ON position. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System" for further information.

Press neutral button (2). Engage parking brake control (1).

The dump body should be down and the hoist control should be in FLOAT position (3).

For ejector body machines the tailgate should be up and the hoist control should be in first HOLD position (4).
Sound the horn.

Turn the engine start switch (5) to the START position.
Release the engine start switch when the engine starts.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.
Note: For starting below −18 °C (0.0 °F), use of further cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, a fuel heater, or some extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below −23 °C (−10.0 °F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold-Weather Recommendations".
