Attach a suitable lifting device to the differential and bevel gear. Turn over the differential and bevel gear. Use Tooling (F) to tighten adjusting nut (26). Tighten adjusting nut (26) until a zero backlash position has been achieved. Loosen adjusting nut (26) by 1/2 of a turn.
Illustration 42 g00619359
Use Tooling (G) to tighten adjusting nut (25) while the differential and bevel gear are rotated. Tighten adjusting nut (25) until the rolling torque exceeds the measurement in Step 48.
Use Tooling (G) to tighten adjusting nut (25) until a rolling torque of 5.6 N m (50 lb in) to 9.3 N m (82 lb in) is achieved. The rolling torque should be reduced by 50% for bearings with more than 100 service hours. Tighten the nut until the correct rolling torque is reached. No end play should exist in the assembly.Note: When you replace the pinion shaft bearings with new bearings, there is a risk of premature failure of the bearings when the bearings are subject to high speeds prior to normal break-in. Operate the machine for 10 hours in first gear or second gear. Do not operate the machine in third gear during the break-in period.

Use Tooling (H) to check the backlash. The backlash for the differential and bevel gear should be 0.48 0.15 mm (.019 .006 inch).
If the backlash is not within specifications, loosen one adjustment nut and tighten the opposite adjustment nut equally. This will keep the bearing preload.

When the proper backlash is obtained, tighten bolts (24) to a torque of 460 70 N m (340 52 lb ft). Turn the bolts by an additional 180 10 degrees after the bolts have been torqued.

Check the tooth contact pattern of the pinion and the bevel gear.
Place a small amount of Prussian blue, red lead, or paint on the teeth of the bevel gear.
Rotate the pinion in both directions.
Proper tooth contact between the pinion and the bevel gear should look like Illustration 45.
The correct tooth contact starts near the inside of the bevel gear and extended 25 to 50 percent of the tooth.
If the tooth contact pattern looks like Illustration 46, use the following procedure:
Remove some of shims (16) from the housing.
Repeat Steps 49 through 53 in order to check the backlash.
Repeat Step 55 in order to check the tooth contact pattern.
If the tooth contact pattern looks like Illustration 47, use the following procedure:
Add some of shims (16) to the housing.
Repeat Steps 49 through 53 in order to check the backlash.
Repeat Step 55 in order to check the tooth contact pattern.
