(4) 4V5395 Shim Pack: Shim pack thickness:Eight shims ... 0.15 mm (.006 in)One shim ... 0.81 mm (.032 in)Eleven shims ... 0.051 mm (.002 in)(9) Torque for twelve bolts (5) that fasten pinion housing to carrier (3).. 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft)(10) Torque for twelve bolts that fasten carrier (3) to the axle housing ... 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft)(13) Apply 9S3263 Thread Lock to the internal threads in bevel gear (14). Torque 24 bolts that fasten bevel gear (14) to the differential group ... 135 20 N m (100 15 lb ft)(15) Torque for bolts that hold the differential group together ... 135 15 N m (100 11 lb ft)(16) Torque for bolts that fasten the caps to carrier (3) after the preload and backlash adjustments have been made ... 55 10 N m (40 7 lb ft) (Not Shown)Adjustment Procedure For Pinion Preload:
1. Install bearing cups in housing (5). Bearing cups must be seated against the shoulders in housing (6).2. Install the bearing cone next to the pinion teeth on pinion (6). Bearing cone must be seated against the shoulder of pinion (6).3. Lubricate bearing and install pinion (6) in housing (5). Lubricate and install bearing cone, washer (7) and nut (8).4. Position the assembly in a soft-jawed vise. Tighten the vise against the teeth on pinion (6). While turning housing (5) tighten nut (8) until the torque needed to turn the pinion is: New bearings ... 0.7 to 1.1 N m (6 to 10 lb in)Used bearings ... 0.35 to 0.55 N m (3 to 5 lb in) Check to be sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (6).5. When the torque needed to turn the pinion is correct, retain (stake) nut (8) by peening the collar on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (6). See Illustration A for the correct tooling and dimensions.
Illustration ADifferential Backlash and Bearing Adjustment
The following procedure controls backlash and bearing preload. This procedure gives the same results for used and new bearings.1. Fasten pinion housing (5) to carrier (3). If original gears, carrier assembly and housing are used again, use the original thickness of shims (4). If any of these parts are replaced, install a shim pack thickness of 80% of a new full shim pack. SHIM PACK (4) thickness may have to be changed when adjusting the tooth contact pattern.2. Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of ... 135 15 N m (100 11 lb ft)3. With housing (5) fastened to carrier (3), position pinion (6) in the vertical position, downward.4. Lubricate bearings and install bearings cups on the differential bearings to protect them.5. Install differential in carrier (3) with bevel gear (14) on side opposite the pin hole in carrier (3).6. Install caps (1) and (12) and adjustment rings (2) and (11). Adjustment rings (2) and (11) must turn freely.7.
