Location of the J1939 (CAN A) data link terminating resistor 2 (arrow). The J1939 (CAN A) data link terminating resistor 1 is located on the machine harness at the Engine ECM connector.
The CID 1960 diagnostic code is associated with the ignition key reader. The FMI 09 diagnostic code means the Power Train ECM did not receive expected information from the Machine Security System (MSS) key reader over the J1939 (CAN A) data link.Note: The Machine Security System (MSS) must be installed in order for this diagnostic code to be logged.Test Step 1. CHECK THE CATERPILLAR ELECTRONIC TECHICIAN (ET) SCREENS
Check the active diagnostic screen and the logged diagnostic screen for a communication error between the Power Train ECM and the key reader. Expected Result:Cat ET reports CID 1960 FMI 09 diagnostic code as being active, or the diagnostic code has been logged. Results:
YES - The electronic technician reports CID 1960 FMI 09 as being active, or the diagnostic code has been logged.Repair: Examine the connections on the CAN A data link between the key reader and the Power Train ECM. Ensure that all connections in the data link circuit are clean, tight, and in good condition.Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The diagnostic code has NOT been logged or the diagnostic is NOT active.Repair: The diagnostic code is not active at this time. Resume normal machine operation.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER TO THE KEY READER
Disconnect the machine harness connector from the MSS key reader.
Turn the key switch to the ON position. At the machine harness connector for the key reader, measure the voltage between contact 1 (wire 308-YL(Yellow)) and contact 2 (wire 200-BK(Black)). Measure the voltage between contact 1 (wire 308-YL(Yellow)) and frame ground. Expected Result:The voltage that is measured for each measurement is approximately 24 DCV.Results:
YES - The voltage that is measured for each measurement is approximately 24 DCV. The supply voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - One of the voltage measurements is not correct. There is a problem in the wiring harness. If the voltage measurement between contact 1 and frame ground is less than 24 DCV, then the supply wire 308-YL(Yellow) is either open or shorted in the machine harness. Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. If the voltage measurement between contact 1 and contact 2 is less than 24 DCV and the frame ground measurement is OK, then the ground wire 200-BK(Black) is either open or shorted in the machine harness. Check the wiring harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE TERMINATING RESISTORS AND THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT
Reconnect the machine harness connector to the MSS key reader.
Disconnect the J2 machine harness connector from the Power Train ECM.
Measure the resistance between the CAN A + contact J2-67 (wire F711-GN(Green)) and the CAN A - contact J2-68 (wire F712-GY(Grey)) on the machine harness connector for the ECM. Expected Result:The resistance measurement is approximately 60
