Pull the main filter element (3) from the inner seat seal, turning slightly.Note: Use a damp cloth to clean the inside of the housing thoroughly. Ensure that no dust or dirt contaminates the clean air side of the filter.Cleaning the Main Element
Note: Never wash, brush, or beat the main element during cleaning. Only use air to clean the main element in emergencies. Ensure that no dust contaminates the inside of the main element. Since small defects are difficult to detect, Caterpillar recommends the installation of new elements in order to protect engines and devices.
Caterpillar recommends certified air filter cleaning services that are available at participating Cat dealers. The Caterpillar cleaning process uses proven procedures to assure consistent quality and sufficient filter life.
Observe the following guidelines if you attempt to clean the filter element:
Do not tap or strike the filter element in order to remove dust.
Do not wash the filter element
Use low-pressure compressed air in order to remove the dust from the filter element. Air pressure must not exceed 207 kPa (30 psi). Direct the air flow up the pleats and down the pleats from the inside of the filter element. Take extreme care in order to avoid damage to the pleats.
Do not use air filters with damaged pleats, gaskets, or seals. Dirt entering the engine will damage engine components.

Pressurized air can be used to clean primary air filter elements that have not been cleaned more than twice. Pressurized air will not remove deposits of carbon and oil. Use filtered, dry air with a maximum pressure of 207 kPa (30 psi).Fit a tube with an end with a 90 degree bend (1) on a compressed air gun (2). The tube must be long enough to reach the bottom of the main element. Use dry, compressed air to clean the main element. Carefully move the tube up and down the main element, spraying air from the inside out until no more dust escapes.
Before reinstalling a cleaned main element, check the main element thoroughly for signs of damage to the paper bellows and the rubber seals
Use an appropriate inspection lamp to check each fold of the paper bellows for cracks and holes.
Use a 60-watt blue light in a dark room or a similar location. Place the blue light into the primary air filter element.
Rotate the primary air filter element and inspect the element for tears or holes.
Inspect the air filter element for light showing through the filter material.
If necessary, compare the cleaned air filter element to a new air filter element that has the same part number.Note: Only use original elements. Never install elements with a metallic outer casing.Installing the Main Element
Slide the main filter element into the housing with the open side towards the front of the housing.
Mount the bottom housing section. Ensure that the dust discharge is positioned at the bottom of the housing.
Mount the wire clamp fasteners in the slot
