Initial Start-up
Use the following procedure to manually start a generator set for the first time. Use the following procedure to manually start a generator set that has been out of service for a long time for maintenance.Note: The generator set may be stopped at any time by pressing the Emergency Stop Push button or by pressing the "STOP" key and bypassing the cooldown period.Note: Prior to restarting the set, the emergency stop push button must be released by turning the emergency stop push button clockwise. The Emergency Stop Shutdown must also be reset.
Prime the lube oil system by first removing the fuse for the fuel solenoid from the Engine Interface Module (EIM). This prevents the engine from starting. Press the "RUN" key, allow the engine to crank twice and then press the "STOP" key. Replace the fuse for the fuel solenoid in the EIM. Press the "RUN" key in order to crank the engine again and also view the oil pressure reading on the display. Press the "STOP" key when the oil pressure reading has been viewed. If the oil pressure has not risen to sufficient levels then investigate the reason for lack of oil pressure prior to further attempts to crank the engine.
Prime the fuel system with the hand priming pump and bleed the entrapped air from the fuel filter. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Start: Ensure that the emergency stop push button and any remote stop buttons are released. Press the "RUN" key. For a cold engine, preheat time can be set to activate the glow plugs. The engine will automatically crank up to three times until the engine begins to run. If the engine fails to start, the control system will be inhibited and the "FAIL TO START" event will be logged in the "EVENT LOG". If this happens determine the cause of the failure to start.
Shut down the generator set after approximately one minute after starting the engine. Press the "STOP" key and bypass the cooldown period if the cooldown period is set. Remove the radiator cap and wait for five minutes. This will allow any trapped air to escape. Check the coolant level and refill the radiator,if necessary. Note: A newly filled coolant system can have air locks that must be cleared by running the engine for a short time and the system refilled prior to extended running of the engine.
Restart the engine. Use the following procedures in step 3 above.
Check for any abnormal noise or vibration.
Check the control panel for indications of abnormal operation. Check for an abnormally high temperature or an abnormally low oil pressure. The oil pressure should be in the normal range within about 10 seconds of starting.
Check the control panel for output voltage and frequency. The voltage is factory set and the control panel should indicate the rated voltage. Adjustments should only be carried out by a qualified technician. Two means of voltage adjustment are available:- Fine adjustment is achieved by varying the
