SHIM PACK 3T9820 - Caterpillar

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an occurrence of a fuel quality that is out of range or use this procedure if the following event code is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".

E229(1) Fuel Energy Content Setting Low The setting that is for the "Fuel Quality (LHV)" parameter is below the acceptable range. The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
E231(3) Fuel Energy Content Setting High The setting for the "Fuel Quality (LHV)" parameter is above the acceptable range. The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
E231(3) Fuel Quality Out of Range The actual BTU of the fuel is out of the acceptable range. The code is logged.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down. Probable Causes

Incorrectly Programmed "Fuel Quality" Parameter
Obtain an analysis of the gas in order to determine the Low Heat Value of the gas supply. Program the "Fuel Quality" parameter to the actual value of the Low Heat Value (LHV).If the quality of the gas is not consistent, obtain several analyses over a period of time. Program the "Fuel Quality" parameter to the average value of the Low Heat Value (LHV).Condensation in the Gas Supply
If liquid is present in the system, determine the source of the liquid.If water is present, check the dryer for the gas for proper operation. Repair the dryer, if necessary. If liquid hydrocarbons are present, consult with the operator about the fuel supply.
