To prevent personal injury, be sure all personnel are clear of the machine. Sound the horn for several seconds before starting the engine.
Never move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position while the engine is operating. Serious damage to the electrical system could result.

Turn the battery disconnect switch (1) to the ON position.

Use the operator station select switch (3) to select the operator station that will be used.
Apply parking brake (5).
Turn machine power switch (6) clockwise to the ON position to supply power to the engine and the machine.
Leave the machine power switch in the ON position for a few seconds to allow the ECM to communicate with the machines components.
Push and hold start button for 2 seconds to initiate start. Release the button. The engine will start.
Push the top arrow button of throttle control (4) to increase the engine speed.Cold Weather Starting
The optional cold start package may be necessary to improve cold start performance, and reduce engine wear. Caterpillar strongly recommends the use of the optional cold start package when working in the following extreme conditions:
Altitudes above 1524 m (5000 ft).
Temperatures below −7° C (19° F).Attempting to start without the cold start package could result in hard starting, failure to start, or engine damage. A coolant heater, a fuel heater, a jacket water heater, or extra battery capacity may be required.Before you operate the machine in temperatures below −23°C (−10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold-Weather Recommendations for All Caterpillar Machines".During cold weather the glow plugs will activate. When the start button is pushed, the green indicator will flash until the glow plug preheat is complete, and then the engine will start.Note: The glow plug preheat is initiated by the key switch. Push the start button within a few seconds of turning on the key for optimum start.Note: If the engine does not start after 30 seconds of cranking time, the starter will disengage to allow cooling of the starter.If the engine did not start, turn off the key and wait for 10 seconds then rotate the key switch to the on position. Wait for 2 minutes before attempting to start the engine again.
