Use 3/8" 16 NC forcing screws to remove trunion. Remove gear and bearings from case as trunion is removed. 28 When the transmission is installed, shims between the bearing cage and case are necessary to align the heel of the pinion to the heel of the bevel gear and to obtain correct gear tooth contact. Adjust bevel gear backlash. See BEVEL GEAR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION. Chalk the bevel gear teeth (discolor). Rotate the pinion and bevel gear to produce a tooth contact pattern on the bevel gear teeth. Correct tooth contact starts near the toe and extends approximately 30 per cent of the length of a bevel gear tooth. If tooth contact is more on one side of a tooth or is near the heel of a tooth, the location of the pinion shaft must be readjusted. Add or remove shims to relocate the pinion shaft. Readjust the bevel gear backlash. Produce another tooth contact pattern. It may be necessary to make several pinion and bevel gear adjustments to obtain both correct tooth contact and backlash.29, 30 Remove gears (30) from shaft (29) and case as shaft is removed.31 Tools required to remove bearing from pinion shaft: 8B7548 Push Puller, 8B7549 Legs, 8B7555 Adapters, 8B7751 Bearing Pulling Attachment, 8B7560 Step Plate.32, 33, 34 Bearing outer race removal tools needed: 8B7548 Puller Group, 8B7553 Adapters, 8B7554 Bearing Cup Pulling Attachment.Transmission Controls (Direct Drive)
