Oil Supply
The self contained oil supply will improve governor life cycle by eliminating the opportunity for contamination from the engine oil. Governors on all new engines will be factory filled with oil. Replacement governors must be filled with oil before operation. In general, the same oil used in the engine will be satisfactory for use in the governor. For ambient temperature extremes, a synthetic oil is recommended.
Fill the governor with clean, noncorrosive, oxidation and rust inhibiting oil that has minimum foaming or air retention qualities, and a viscosity of 100 - 300 SUS (Saybolt Universal Seconds) at operating temperature [typically 60 - 93 degrees C (140 - 200 degrees F)]. Fill to the line on the sight glass [approximately 2.2 L (2.33 qt)]. After setup, and when the engine and governor are at operating temperature, again check the oil level and add more oil if necessary. Oil should be visible in the sight glass at all times.
Oil Viscosities
The governor will operate at temperatures near the pour point of the oil, but governor operation will be slow, and may be unstable. Do not operate the governor at a temperature less than the pour point of the oil.
Operating the governor at temperatures greater than the high limit (50 SUS), will decrease the stability of the governor, and may result in an inability to restart hot. Operating the governor at a temperature greater than the point at which the performance of the oil decreases can cause governor failure. See the Oil Viscosity Chart for temperature ranges.
The recommended governor oil change interval is 20,000 hours.
Oil Viscosity ChartSmoke Limiter
The new governor has an improved smoke limiter design to help eliminate limiter sticking. This sticking may cause the engine to have low power as the limiter would not move and would continuously limit the fuel. The new improved limiter design will also reduce the stem side to side movement. This will improve the diaphragm life.
Oil-Ring Groove
The new governors have a larger O-ring groove and seal to improve the seal between the governor and governor drive. The O-ring groove is common to the 3500 pump housing.
