Information:

You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Cooling System Coolant
Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section.
Drain the coolant earlier whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. The radiator caps are located in the top of the hood, on the left and right side of the machine. 1. Remove both radiator caps slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Open the drain valves (one drain valve is located on the rear cross member and one drain valve is located on the side wall on the right side of the machine). Allow the coolant to drain.3. Close the drain valve. Fill both systems with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.4. Start and run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution.5. Flush the systems with water, with the engine stopped, until the draining water is clear.6. Close both the drain valves.7. Add the coolant solution. See Cooling System Specifications and Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities. Do not add supplemental coolant additive or change element at this time, unless you are not using Caterpillar Antifreeze which contains additive.8. Start the engine and operate it with the radiator caps off, until the thermostats open and the level stabilizes.9. Maintain the coolant levels in the sight gauges.10. Install the caps.11. Stop the engine.Clean the Cooling System Relief Valves
Clean or replace the relief valves if the system overheats or loss of coolant is observed.1. Remove the radiator caps slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Remove the bolts from both valves and remove the valve assemblies. 3. Inspect valve (1), valve seals (2) and gasket (3). Replace if necessary.4. Inspect valve cover (4) and mounting bolts (5).5. Install both relief valve assemblies.6. Check the coolant levels. Maintain the coolant levels in the sight gauges.7. Install the radiator caps.Clean Outside of Radiator Fins
Remove the radiator guard.Compressed air is preferred, but high pressure water or steam can be used to remove dust, leaves and general debris from radiator fins.Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator
Replace
Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.
Replace the water temerature regulator (thermostat) on a regular basis in order to reduce the chance of unscheduled downtime and of problems with the cooling system. The thermostat should be replaced after the cooling system has been cleaned. Replace the thermostat and replace the seals while the cooling system is completely drained or while the cooling system coolant is drained to a level that is below the thermostat housing. If you are only replacing the thermostat, drain the cooling system coolant to a level that is below the thrmostat housing.
Failure to replace the engine's thermostat on a regularly scheduled basis could causes severe engine damage.
Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design cooling
