Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
Remove the tire and the rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front) - Remove and Install" or refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Remove the final drive planetary carriers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Planetary Carrier - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Note: Use the same removal procedure in order to remove the final drives, the brakes and the wheels from the front or from the rear. However, the removal procedures for the front tires and for the rear tires are different. Make sure that you use the correct procedure.

Remove four bolts (1) and two guards (2) .

Remove bolt (3), the washer, and the clip.
Remove brake line (4) .

Attach Tooling (A) and Tooling (B) to the final drive, and wheel brake assembly, as shown.
Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to Tooling (A) .
Remove 34 bolts (5) and the washers.
Use the hoist in order to remove final drive and wheel brake assembly (6). The weight of final drive and wheel brake assembly (6) is 953 kg (2100 lb).

Remove O-ring seal (7) from final drive and wheel brake assembly.

Place final drive and wheel brake assembly on suitable wood blocks, as shown.
Remove three bolts (8) from retainer (9) .
Install Tooling (C) to final drive (10), as shown.
Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to Tooling (C) .
Remove four bolts (11) and the washers from wheel brake assembly.
Use the hoist in order to remove final drive from the wheel brake assembly. The weight of the final drive is 749 kg (1650
