3. Remove pump group (4). Remove two bolts (3), the washer, the O-ring seal and flange (5) from the torque converter shaft. 4. Remove six bolts (6) that hold housing (7) to the carrier. 5. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in housing (7). Fasten a hoist to the housing, and remove it. It is necessary to hit the end of the shaft with a plastic hammer until the housing is free of the bearing on the shaft. The weight of the housing is 45 kg (99 lb.). 6. Remove bearing (8) from the shaft with tooling (A). Bearing (8) may be damaged when it is removed. A replacement bearing must be used.7. Remove bolts (9) that hold the impeller to the converter housing. 8. Install four 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (10) in impeller (11). Remove impeller (11) from converter housing (12). 9. Turn the impeller over. Remove six bolts (15) and two plates (14). Remove wheel assembly (stator) (13). 10. Turn the impeller over. Install three 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws in carrier (16). Remove carrier (16). 11. Remove sleeve (17) from carrier (16) with tool (B). 12. Turn the impeller over. Remove bolts (18) and plates (19). Remove the gear assembly from impeller (11). 13. Install gear assembly (20) in a press, and remove the bearing from the gear with the press and tool (C). 14. Remove bolts (21) and retainer (22). 15. Remove bolt (23) and retainer (24) from the end of the shaft. 16. Remove ring (25) from shaft with tool (D) 17. Remove retaining ring (26) from bearing (27) with tool (D). 18. Remove shaft (28) and turbine as a unit from the housing. Hit the end of the shaft with a plastic hammer to remove the unit from the housing. 19. Put the turbine and shaft in position on a press. Remove the shaft and bearing from the turbine with the press and tooling (E). 20. Remove the retaining rings that fasten adapters (30) to gears (29). Remove adapters (30) from gears (29). 21. Turn the torque converter housing on its side. Remove two bolts (31) and two gears (32) from the housing. 22. Remove retaining rings (33) from gears (32). Remove retainers (34) and the bearings from the gears as a unit. 23. Remove the retainers from bearings (35) with a press. 24. Remove lip-type seal (36) from the converter cover.Assemble Torque Converter
Before the torque converter is assembled, see Torque Converter Clearance Checks. These clearances must be correct for the torque converter to operate with efficiency. 1. Install the lip-type seal in the converter cover with tooling (A). Install the seal until it is even with the outside surface of the cover and with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the cover. 2. Heat two bearings (1) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearings on retainers (2). 3. Install the bearings and retainers in two gears (4). Install retaining rings (3). 4.
