Remove bolt (12) and the washer.

Remove three bolts (13). Remove cover assembly (14) .

Remove water temperature regulator (16). Remove gasket (15) .
Use the following procedure to test the water temperature regulator:
Put the water temperature regulator in a pan of water. Heat the water in order to test the water temperature regulator for thermostatic action.Note: Stir the water in the pan in order to maintain an even temperature during the test.
When the valve of the water temperature regulator lifts more that 10 mm (0.4 inch), measure the temperature of the water.Note: The opening temperature for the water temperature regulator is 76.5° 2°C (169.7° 4°F).
If the valve fails to function correctly, replace the water temperature regulator.Installation Procedure
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
If the water temperature regulator is installed incorrectly, it will cause the engine to overheat.
Clean the mounting surfaces for the water temperature regulator.

Install water temperature regulator (16). Install gasket (15) .Note: O-rings, gaskets, and seals should always be replaced.

Install cover assembly (14). Install three bolts (13) .
Perform Steps 4.a through Steps 4.g if the machine is equipped with an air conditioner.

Install the washer and bolt (12) .

Place refrigerant compressor (10) onto the mount for the compressor.
Install the washers and bolts (9). Install the washers, the nut, and bolt (11) .

Install the clip and bolt (8) for the refrigerant lines.

Install V-belt (7) onto the compressor pulley.
Use tension adjusting bolt (5) to adjust the tension of the air conditioner V-belt. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure for adjusting the tension of the V-belts.
Tighten bolt (6) .

Install the clip and bolt (4) that secures wiring harness (3) .

Connect upper radiator hose (2). Tighten hose clamp (1) .
Fill the radiator with coolant to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for further information.
Close the engine hood.
