Information:
Damper Installation
It is important that new dampers (rubber strips) be installed when radiators with side channels and thin top support (header) plates are rebuilt. The dampers prevent excessive movement of the radiator after installation. Excessive movement of the radiator puts stress on the joints between the tubes of the core assembly and the header plates. This can cause cracks and leaks.
When installing dampers do the following.
1. Remove all old rubber from the channels.2. Cut new dampers from 6V2499 Bulk Seal.3. Apply 5H2471 Cement (green) where dampers are to be installed.4. Remove protective backing from dampers before installation.Alignment Of Studs In Radiator Side Channels
Cracks and leaks can also be caused when the angle brace studs and the side holes are out of alignment. The misalignment can be corrected.
Do the following steps to make sure alignment is correct.
1. Disassemble the radiator core assembly.2. Remove the side channels and angle braces.3. Remove the four 3/8" studs from each of the angle braces.4. Drill these holes to a diameter of 13 mm (.516").5. Install 4M1217 Studs (1/2-13 THD) and weld them in place.6. Enlarge the holes in the side channels to a diameter of 14.5 mm (.57").7. Use the reference article to assemble the radiator.Installation Of Upper Radiator Mounts
Care must be taken when installing upper radiator mounts. Use only 5P8246 Washers (hardened) between the resilient mount assemblies and the mounting brackets. Do not use standard or soft washers. They will wear excessively and permit the mount to loosen.
