Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.The Caterpillar Digital Voltage Regulator (CDVR) is part of a complex system that requires thorough troubleshooting before making a decision on replacement of the CDVR.Problem
The CDVR may appear to malfunction. When the CDVR appears to be malfunctioning, the root cause of the malfunction may be difficult to determine.In order to determine the root cause of the malfunction, perform the procedure that is listed below.Solution
Perform the following procedure in order to troubleshoot the CDVR:
When possible, record all CDVR settings.
Verify that the current release of software is installed in the CDVR. If the software is not current, install the latest software for the CDVR.
Determine if the settings have been optimized for the installation. If the CDVR does not have settings that have been optimized, optimize the settings. Refer to the literature that is referenced above.
Refer to the literature that is referenced above in order to accumulate the following information that is required for Illustration 1 ("Failure Information Sheet"):
CDVR serial number
Voltage
Current
kW
Power Factor (PF)
Changes to the parts list from the original list
Attachment of a clear picture of the label for the failed regulator
Attachment of a clear picture of the label for the replaced regulator
Listing of the settings for the regulator
Description of the problem and steps for troubleshooting
Description of installation
Information of the commissioning procedure for the CDVR
Confirmation of damage
Attachment of wiring diagram for remote mounted CDVR
Please work through your Caterpillar Technical Communicator and submit the "Failure Information Sheet" to the Dealer Solution Network (DSN) in order to obtain the information that is necessary to complete any repairs. Reference Technical Information Bulletin, TIBU5364 in the Service Request.
A CDVR that is replaced is subject to a Part Return Request (PRR) for analysis by the factory. Prior to replacing a CDVR, a thorough troubleshooting process is required to ensure an accurate diagnosis of a faulty CDVR. The "Failure Information Sheet" and the Service Request (DSN) will serve as clear documentation of the troubleshooting process. When you process the return of the CDVR, include a reference of the service request (DSN) with the PRR (if applicable).
