Obtain a fuel sample from each of the following locations:
Unfiltered Fuel
Filtered fuel
Fuel Return

The fuel is under pressure and may spray out when the valve is opened. Personal injury can result. Ensure that you wear eye protection at all times while obtaining a fuel sample.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.
Stop the engine.
Attach the hose assembly to the appropriate port for obtaining a fuel sample.
Use a clean towel to wipe off the connector that is closest to the outlet of the valve on the hose assembly.
Start the engine.
While the engine is running and the hose assembly is attached, open the valve and dispense at least 177 mL (6 fl oz) of fuel into a suitable container. Do not use this fuel for the sample.
Ensure that the connector or the valve does not contact the sampling bottle. Collect the appropriate quantity of fuel in the sampling bottle.
Label the sampling bottle with pertinent information. Include the engine serial number and the engine's location.
Clear any diagnostic codes that may have occurred during the fuel sample.
