Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove bolts (1) from cover (2).
Carefully remove cover (2) and the gasket. Note: It may be necessary to remove the governor in order to remove the cover at the front of the engine.

Remove bolts (4), lifter shaft (5), and lifters (3) from cover (2). Installation Procedure

Position lifters (3) and lifter shaft (5) on cover (2). Install bolts (4).

Position the gasket and cover (2) on the engine.
Install bolts (1) in cover (2). End By:
Install the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Install".
