Inject starting aid (ether) only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up until the engine is running smoothly.Use ether sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Use ether for cold starting purposes only.After 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position. The battery disconnect switch is inside of an access door in the battery compartment on the left side of the machine.

Move the transmission direction selector to the NEUTRAL position.

Engage the parking brake.

Turn the key start switch to the ON position. The monitoring system performs an automatic self test. The action alarm sounds and all of the indicator lights come on briefly. The indicator light for the parking brake will stay on. The indicator light for the attachment control lockout will stay on. The indicator light for the auto kickdown will stay on until the function is unselected. The indicator light for the parking brake stays on until the parking brake is released. The indicator light for the attachment control lockout stays on until the controls are unlocked. If the system detects a fault, check the electrical system. Make all of the necessary repairs before you start the engine.
Turn the start switch key to the START position. Crank the engine.See the Topic "Starting With Engine Prelubrication System". This article is located in the "Engine Starting" section of this manual.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.

Push in the button for the ether starting aid. Release the button for the ether starting aid.
While you are cranking the engine, push the button for the ether starting aid in intervals of two seconds. Until the engine is running smoothly, continue to operate the ether starting aid.
Release the start switch key when the engine starts.For starting below -18°C (0°F), the use of the cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, a jacket water heater, and extra battery capacity may be required.At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer.
