A design change was madeto the final drive. The new design used a dowel pin in order to retainthe planet pin. Some of these trucks have experienced low hour failuresof the planet pin retention dowel. When the dowel fails, the planet pinis allowed to move, resulting in a failure of the final drive.Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediatelyto schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time requiredto complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letterdated February 11, 2003 when scheduling this service. Refer to the Service Manual and Parts Bookas necessary.1. Remove the Final Drive.Note: It is not necessary to remove the rearwheel and tires.2. Disassemble the Final Drive.3. Machine the snap ring grooves into the Carrier.Note: Some carriers may have the snap ringgrooves in the carrier. (773/775 BDA226-248, BEC184-190)4. Assemble the Final Drive using the new parts.
Install the Final Drive.
773/775 BDA105-225, BEC105-183 (Need to MachineCarrier)
Additional machining may be required on certain229-8692 Covers. Two holes may have been located incorrectly. If the holesare in the wrong location then two new holes need to be machined in thecorrect location.Note: The two holes in the wrong locationdo not need to be plugged. Please refer to the illusions for location detail.
