At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with the bare hand.Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the cooling system information in Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling system components.
Mixing Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Caterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling systems components.
If the coolant in the machine is changed to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations", "Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) Cooling System Maintenance".

Open access cover (1) for radiator cap (2) .
Slowly loosen radiator cap (2) in order to release the pressure. Remove the radiator cap.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Open drain valve (3) that is on the bottom of the radiator.

Open access door (4) for the radiator. Open shutoff valves (5) (not shown) for the cab heater. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is clean.
Close drain valve (3) .
Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" and Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations", "Cooling System Specifications".
Start the engine. Operate the engine without radiator cap (2) until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (0.5 inch) of the bottom of the filler pipe.
Close shutoff valves (5) for the cab heater.

Inspect the condition of the gasket on radiator cap (2). If the gasket is damaged, replace the radiator cap.
Install the radiator cap.
Stop the engine.

Use gauge body (6) in order to check the coolant level of the coolant tank. If additional coolant is necessary, remove the radiator cap and add the appropriate coolant solution. Install the radiator cap.
Close access cover (1) for the radiator cap.
Close access door (4) for the radiator.
