Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the exhaust manifolds.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Drain the coolant from the engine.

Remove the bolts that hold elbows (2) and (3) to the turbochargers. Remove the elbows from the pipes.
Remove two pipes (1) from the housing.

Remove bolt (6) in order to disconnect the linkage for the air inlet choke.
Remove tube (9).
Remove bolts (7).
Remove housing (8) and the gasket. Replace the gasket.
Remove bolts (5).
Remove housings (4) and the gaskets. Check the gaskets for wear or for damage. Replace the gaskets, if necessary.

Remove the bolts that hold flanges (10) in place. Remove the flanges and tube (11) as an assembly.
Remove the bolts and the retainers that hold tube (12) in place on elbow (13).
Remove bolts and spacers (14) that hold elbow (13) in position. Remove the elbow from the aftercooler and tube (12).

Remove pipes (15) and (16) from the area between the aftercooler housings.
Remove the bolts that hold two pipes (17) to the rear aftercooler housing.
Fasten a hoist to the front aftercooler housing. Remove the bolts, and remove the front aftercooler housing from the cylinder block. The weight of the front aftercooler is approximately 236 kg (520 lb).

Fasten a hoist to rear aftercooler housing (18). Remove bolts (19) and remove the aftercooler. The weight of the rear aftercooler is approximately 236 kg (520 lb).

Remove gaskets (20) from the cylinder block.
