Information:
Caterpillar oil is not the only oil that is available. Commercial oil is also available. This oil is called commercial FD-1 oil, and this oil may be substituted for Caterpillar FDAO.FDAO/FD-1 oils and TDTO/TO-4 oils are compatible and the oils can be mixed together. However, any such blending of oil significantly reduces the benefits of using the FDAO.
Caterpillar FDAO (SAE 60) oil is recommended for maximum component life for the final drive assemblies.
Note: FDAO is NOT recommended for final drives which contain clutches, brakes, or any compartment that contains friction materials. Also, FDAO should NOT be used in engines, transmissions, or hydraulic systems. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU 6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations" for additional information on selecting fluids.Lubricant Viscosity
In the second quarter of 2002, Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU 6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations" will be updated in order to reflect new oil viscosity recommendations for large Track-Type Tractors and Pipelayers. This change is an effort to emphasize the importance of basing the selection of the lubrication viscosity on the application of the machine as well as the ambient temperature. Illustration 1 and Table 2 reflect the changes that will appear in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU 6250-12, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".Selecting the Viscosity of a Lubricant
Refer to Table 2 under the column that has the title "Application". Choose the type of application that best describes your operating conditions. The recommendation of lubrication viscosity for your machine is to the right of the selected application. If both descriptions are applicable, use the "Severe or Contiuous Usage" recommendations. Then refer to the columns that have the title "Min" and "Max" in order to determine the proper viscosity grade of oil. The "Min" column indicates the coldest ambient air temperature for starting and operating a cold machine. The "Max" column indicates the highest anticipated ambient air temperature that will be experienced while the machine is in operation. Use the highest oil viscosity that is allowed for the ambient air temperature at the start-up of the machine and the operation of the machine. The information that is in Table 2 can also be found in Illustration 1. To determine the proper grade of viscosity of the oil by using Illustration 1, choose the application that is applicable for your operating conditions. If the descriptions in both arrows are applicable, use the "Severe or Contiuous Usage" recommendations. Use the highest viscosity that is allowed for the ambient air temperature at the start-up of the machine and the operation of the machine.Temperatures that are in the range with footnote (1) in the following illustration - The white dashed bars that are on the black bars represent a minimum pour temperature. Oil that is below this temperature will no longer pour. If an idle machine is below this temperature, exercise the machine for several minutes prior to production operation. This will allow the oil to warm up to operating temperature. Then, oil will begin to flow before the stresses of production operation
