Caterpillar engines are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate that are mounted on the engine.Caterpillar dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. The Serial Number Plate is on the rear left side of the valve cover base.

The Information Plate is located toward the rear of the top flat surface of the valve cover. The engine information plate faces the right side of the engine.

The generator identification and information plate is located on the left side of the generator.When service is required, the information that is given on this plate should be used. The generator identification and information plate includes the following information: serial number, model number and the rating of the generator set. The generator set consists of the engine and the generator. All pertinent generator data is also included on the plate in order to provide the information that is necessary to order parts.
