23. Remove spring (31) from valve spool (26). 24. Remove spacer (32) from the pump housing. 25. Remove plug (33) from the pump housing. Remove the O-ring seal from the plug. Remove the pump housing from the vise and hold it in a horizontal position so the ball will fall out of the pump housing.Assemble Steering Metering Pump
Clean all parts with a clean petroleum base solvent and air dry. Do not make dry with rags. Unless another indication is given, do not put oil on parts before assembly.
1. Inspect all parts for damage and make replacements if needed. Inspect all O-ring seals for damage and make replacements if needed. 2. Put the O-ring seal in position on plug (3). Install ball (2) and plug (3) in pump housing (1). Tighten the plug to a torque of 17 3 N m (12 2 lb. ft.). 3. Put pump housing (1) in position as shown in a vise. 4. Install thrust washer (7), thrust bearing (6) and thrust washer (5) on the input shaft (9). Install snap ring (4) with tool (A). Slide spring wave washer (8) over thrust washer (7) and thrust bearing (6). 5. Install spring (11) on the valve spool if it was removed.6. Install ball (12) into the ball seat in valve spool (10). Make sure the ball is in the ball seat and not in the through hole opposite the ball seat. 7. Put input shaft (9) in position in valve spool (10) with ball (12) in alignment with the groove in the shaft.8. Slowly turn the spool in a counterclockwise direction until the thrust washer on the shaft makes contact with the valve spool. 9. Use torsion bar (14) as a gauge to put the valve spool in the center of its movement. This is the "NEUTRAL" position of the valve spool. Put the bar in position between the thrust washer and valve spool as shown. The valve spool must be in the "NEUTRAL" position before the drive ring is installed in the valve spool. The drive ring can be installed in the wrong position in the valve spool if the valve spool is not in the "NEUTRAL" position.10. Install drive ring (13) into the valve spool. Make sure the drive ring is engaged with the input shaft splines. A small rotation of the input shaft will engage the drive ring completely.11. Remove torsion bar (14) from the valve spool. 12. Install spacer (15) and torsion bar (14) in valve spool (10). 13. Make an alignment of the hole in the torsion bar with the hole in the input shaft and install needle roller (16).14. With a pin punch push the needle roller approximately 0.8 mm (.03 in.) below the outside diameter of the shaft. 15. Put spacer (17) in position on the valve spool. Do not put a side force on the valve spool which can cause seizure of the special fitted assembly.16. Install valve spool (10) in the pump housing.
