Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.

1. Diagnostic Codes and/or Event Codes
A. Certain diagnostic codes and/or event codes may cause an engine shutdown. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and check for active codes and for logged codes.
Codes
Result: There are active codes.
Troubleshoot any codes that are present prior to continuing with this procedure.
Result: There are no active codes.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Electrical Connectors
A. Check for the correct installation of the J1/P1 and J2/P2 for the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Thoroughly inspect the connectors for the engine speed/timing sensors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
C. Inspect the battery wires from the ECM to the battery compartment. Refer to the Schematic for specific wiring information. Check the keyswitch input to the ECM. Check the unit injector connectors and associated wiring for damage, or for intermittent problems. Inspect the wires and connectors to all circuit protection for the engine. Check the power and ground connections to the ECM. Check any engine shutdown switches and associated wiring. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply - Test".
Connectors
Result: There are no suspect sensors.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: There are suspect connectors.
Repair connectors that are suspect and replace connectors that are suspect.
3. Circuit Breakers
A. Check the state of each of the circuit breakers.
Breakers
Result: Circuit breakers are tripped.
Reset the circuit breakers if the circuit breakers are tripped.
Prior to returning the engine to service, determine the condition that caused the circuit breakers to trip. Make the necessary repairs.
Result: The circuit breakers are not tripped.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Fuel Supply
If there is an immediate engine shutdown, troubleshoot the electrical connectors before proceeding with this procedure.
A. Visually inspect the fuel level in the fuel tank. Do not rely on the fuel gauge only. If necessary, add fuel to the fuel tank. If the engine has been run out of fuel, the fuel system will be necessary to prime the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual.
B. Inspect the fuel system. Refer to Systems Operating/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System - Inspect"
C. Check that the filtered fuel pressure is being cranked. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test".
Fuel
Result: The fuel system is OK.
Result: The fuel system is NOT OK.
Make the necessary repairs.
Result: Fuel pressure is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 5
Result: Fuel pressure is not within specification.
Replace the fuel filters. Clean the primary filter/water separator of debris. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual.
5. Low Pressure Fuel System
A. Check the operation of the fuel pressure regulating valve.
B. Check operation of the fuel transfer pump.
Low-pressure fuel system
Result: The fuel pressure regulating valve is operating properly.
Result: The fuel pressure regulating valve is NOT operating properly.
Continue with this test step, if the problem is not resolved.
Result: The fuel transfer pump is operating
