Schematic of the "Primary Steering Pressure" sensorThis diagnostic code is associated with the "Primary Steering Pressure" sensor. The FMI 03 diagnostic code indicates that the electronic control module (ECM) has detected the sensor signal voltage as being above normal. The pressure sensor sends a variable frequency signal to the ECM in order to indicate the pressure in the primary steering system. The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed below:
The return circuit wire is open.
The signal circuit wire is open or the sensor is disconnected.
The signal circuit wire is shorted to a + battery source.
The pressure sensor has failed.
The Chassis ECM has failed. A failure of the ECM is unlikely.Note: Check to see if an active CID 0041 diagnostic code exists for the 8 VDC sensor power supply before performing this procedure. If an active CID 0041 diagnostic code is present, correct the problem and clear the diagnostic code before performing this procedure.Note: Ensure that the CID 2470 FMI 03 diagnostic code is active. This procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created diagnostic codes. When the problem has been corrected, clear the created diagnostic codes.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SUPPLY VOLTAGE AT THE SENSORUse a calibrated digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key switch to the ON position.
Do not disconnect the sensor from the machine harness.
At the back of the contacts for the sensor, insert the multimeter probes along supply contact 1 (wire R800-OR) and return contact 2 (wire R998-BR). Measure the voltage.Expected Result:The voltage measurement is approximately 8.0 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is approximately 8.0 VDC. The signal is OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is not approximately 8.0 VDC. The voltage is not correct.Repair: There is a problem in the power supply circuit in the machine harness. Refer to the complete machine Electrical Schematic. Check all of the connectors that are in the sensor supply circuit and the return circuit. Ensure that all connections are clean, secure, and in good condition. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE RETURN CIRCUIT AND THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR THE SENSOR
Turn the disconnect switch and the key switch to the OFF position.
Remove the multimeter probes from the back of the machine harness connector for the sensor.
Disconnect the machine harness connector from the sensor. At the harness connector for the sensor, place a jumper wire from contact 2 (wire R998-BR) to contact 3 (wire 417-GY) .
Disconnect the machine harness connectors "J1" and "J2" from the ECM.
At the ECM harness connectors, measure the resistance from return contact "J1-45" (wire R998-BR) to signal contact "J2-49" (wire 417-GY).Expected Result:The resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms. The return circuit and the signal circuit are correct in the machine harness. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. There is a problem in the machine harness.Repair:
