Component Code: 1917SUBJECT: Boost Sensor - Use Correct Replacement Part
PROBLEM:
Excessive moisture is a contributor to incorrect boost sensor readings. Prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to corrosion problems.
When corrosion occurs on a sensor, the sensor may need to be replaced. Field investigation and parts returns have shown that some dealers are not using the correct replacement boost sensor.
Note: Besides corrosion/moisture, another cause of incorrect boost sensor readings on 3196 applications is a corroded 3E-2332 Elbow (carbon steel). The 3E-2332 Elbow is used on 3196 applications in order to connect the boost sensor to the aftercooler. Corrosion in the 3E-2332 Elbow will contaminate the sensor and eventually block the passage between the sensor and the boosted air. During a repair, if a corroded 3E-2332 Elbow is found, replace the 3E-2332 Elbow.
SOLUTION:
Effective with 2XR03340 on the 3196 and 9WR01814 on the 3406E, the 161-9930 Sensor (stainless steel hexport) has been replaced by the 169-3725 Sensor (brass hexport). The new 169-3725 Sensor is more corrosion resistant than the former 161-9930 Sensor.
Note: Do not use the 161-9929 Sensor to replace the 161-9930 Sensor. The 161-9929 Sensor will not auto-calibrate.
