Remove the engine, the rear pump drive, and the torque converter from the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine, Pump Drive (Rear), and Torque Converter - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal components.
Secure the engine in a suitable stand.

Attach Tooling (A) to torque converter housing (1). Position a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). Secure the suitable lifting device to a hoist.
Remove thirteen bolts (2) and the washers that secure torque converter housing (1) and the O-ring seal to rear pump drive (3) .
Separate torque converter housing (1) and the O-ring seal from rear pump drive (3). The weight of the torque converter is 1107 kg (2440 lb).Connection Procedure

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Verify that all of the components of the torque converter are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.Note: Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
