Schematic of the AWD ECM power connections and ground connectionsThe All Wheel Drive (AWD) ECM receives power through the fuse panel. The AWD ECM is connected to power at five contacts on the J1 connector. The AWD ECM is connected to the machine frame ground at four contacts on the J1 connector. An ECM must lose power at each of the five connections in order to completely lose all power for the ECM. There are conditions that can cause the ECM to completely lose power. An open AWD fuse will cause a loss of power. An open or a faulty connection in certain sections of the machine harness could cause a complete loss of power. An Open or poor ground connections can also cause a loss of power to the ECM.If power is completely lost to the AWD ECM or to another ECM on the machine, the ECM that has lost power will not activate any diagnostic codes. When this occurs, a large amount of machine functions will not operate and the other Electronic Control Modules on the machine will activate multiple diagnostic codes. If multiple diagnostic codes have been activated within a short amount of time, always check the power circuits for the controls of the ECM before investigating individual components. If the power circuits for the controls of the ECM are ok, look for a common factor for the components that have the active diagnostic codes. The common factors are often shared grounds or power circuits. The AWD ECM is receiving +battery power at all times. When the key start switch is in the OFF position, the ECM is in a "sleep mode". When the key start switch is in the ON position, the ECM immediately becomes active. The ECM will activate a diagnostic code for another control module if expected information from that module is not received on the data link circuits.Perform the following procedure if you suspect that the power circuit of the AWD ECM has failed.Note: The main disconnect switch is in the ON position.Test Step 1. CHECK THE CIRCUIT BREAKERAn open fuse of the AWD controller will disrupt power to the AWD ECM.
Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Check the fuse of the AWD controller for an open circuit.Expected Result:The 15 amp fuse of the AWD controller is open. Results:
OK - The fuse of the AWD controller is open.Repair: Replace the fuse. Resume machine operation.STOP
NOT OK - The 15 amp fuse of the AWD controller is not open. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE POWER AT THE ECMThis step requires the use of a 7X-1710 Probe or similar tool in order to enable a voltage measurement at the ECM connector without disconnecting the ECM.
The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.
At the machine harness connector J1 for the AWD ECM, insert a multimeter probe along contact J1-31 (wire 155-RD) and insert a multimeter probe along contact J1-13
