Introduction
Machine vibration may cause the fan guard assemblies to break. This breakage sometimes results in damage to the fan itself. Caterpillar now provides stiffened wire guards which are designed to prevent damage to the fan. Installation requires some additional parts. Some modifications to the machine may be required to allow installation of the new guards. This instruction will show the necessary parts for installing the new guards. It will also provide details of the modifications.Do not perform any procedure, outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.Necessary Parts
Removal and Modifications
Removal
(2) Center support section.1. Remove two existing brackets (1). Discard brackets (1). Save the bolts and washers.2. Remove the existing fan guards. Save all mounting bolts and washers.Modifications
1. Drill one 13.8 mm (0.5") Ø hole at location (A).2. Drill one 13.8 mm (0.5") Ø hole at location (B).3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the plates on the opposite side.4. Weld four 1D4717 Nuts on the same side of the plates as the nuts that are already welded on.
(2) Center support section.5. Drill two 8.2 mm (0.32") Ø holes according to the dimensions in the illustration. Tap the two drilled holes with a 3/8" - 16 tap.Installation
1. Using the original hardware, loosely bolt two 7E4931 Guard Assemblies (3) and two 7E4934 Guard Assemblies (4) in position around the outside.2. use the four original bolts and washers removed from locations (B) to secure the fan guards at the four newly drilled hole locations. Use the original hardware at the other center mounting locations.3. Use the original bolts and washers from the discarded brackets at locations (C) and (D) to loosely bolt both ends of two 7E4932 Brackets (5) in position.4. Use twelve 7X0772 Washers provided, six 8T2502 bolts and six 6D0047 Locknuts at six locations (A).5. Tighten all hardware to standard torques.
