D 5P-7373 Axle Installer 1 Note: The installation procedure for the front axle shafts and the rear axle shafts is identical.Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.
Attach a suitable lifting device to the axle shaft. The weight of the axle shaft is approximately 48 kg (105 lb). Install the axle shaft to the final drive.

Slide Tooling (B) over the end of axle shaft (5), as shown. Use Tooling (B) in order to guide the axle shaft into the differential. Remove Tooling (B).

Install spacer (7) and gear (6) to the axle shaft. Use Tooling (C) (not shown) in order to install retaining ring (8) to the axle shaft.
Push the axle shaft completely into the final drive planetary carrier. Note: It may be necessary to slightly rotate the tire and rim, forward or backward in order to engage gear (6) with the final drive planetary gears.

Install O-ring seal (4) to the final drive planetary carrier.
Ensure that the flats on the three planetary shafts in the final drive planetary carrier are facing toward the outside of the carrier. If the flats are in the wrong position the cover can not be installed.

Install Tooling (A) to the final drive carrier. Install cover (2). Make sure that the filler plug in the cover is aligned with the port in the final drive planetary carrier. Install six bolts (1) that hold cover (2) in position.
Remove Tooling (A) and install two remaining bolts (1) in place of Tooling (A).
Install the O-ring seal to drain plug (3). Install drain plug (3).
Fill the differential and final drive assemblies. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the axle housing and the final drive assemblies. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (With Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (Without Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" for the correct filling procedure.
