1052 PS40404 This Program can be administered either before or after failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS40404" as the Part number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the November 30, 2000 (Revised December 2000) Service Letter. Changes were made to the Parts Needed.

PROBLEM
Turbochargers used on certain 3508B and 3516B 60HZ Gen Set engines may have components that are nonconforming, resulting in a severe rub between the compressor wheel and the compressor housing.

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.

Rework Procedure
Carefully remove the turbocharger compressor housing.
Clean the oil tracks from the inlet surface.
Examine the 1180398 Turbocharger for rubbing between the compressor wheel and housing.
If there is no sign of rubbing, reinstall the housing on the turbocharger.
If there is sign of rubbing, replace the complete turbocharger with 1989914 (0R7766).
On replaced turbochargers, carefully reinstall the compressor housing and return the turbocharger as a Warranty Core.
Include the inspected and replaced turbocharger's serial numbers in the claim story.
Inspect the part number tag on any 1180398 Turbochargers in stock for Date Code CLM, DAM, DBM, or DCM in the turbocharger Serial Number (i.e. DAM04620). Place one claim for all stock turbochargers with the Date Code CLM, DAM, DBM, or DCM and return as above.
