Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Rotate the crankshaft until the connection rod is located at the rear of the frame. Using a 19 mm (0.75 inch) wrench, remove the bolts which secure the rod bearing housing cap to the rod bearing housing base. Remove the rod bearing housing cap, the cap half of the rod bearing and the two rod bearing dowels.

Push the connection rod forward until the rod drops away from the rod bearing housing base. Use a wooden hammer to tap on one edge of the rod bearing until the bearing moves out of the rod bearing housing. Repeat the procedure with the other half of the rod bearing. Mark the pairs of the bearings as the bearings are removed so that each bearing can be reinstalled in the exact same orientation.
Inspect each rod bearing for wear and for damage. Do not reinstall a rod bearing which has any of the following characteristics: severely scored, worn through the protective coating to the bronze shell and damage from severe heating. Do not polish or otherwise attempt to repair a rod bearing which is worn or damage. Do not attempt to alter the running clearing of the bearing by altering the thickness of the rod bearing shims.Note: Rod bearings must be replaced in complete sets. Replace the rod half and the cap half.
Assemble the rod bearings and rod bearing housing in the reverse order of the disassembly process. The bearings are subjected to extremely high load conditions. Perform the following actions during the assembly process:
Flush and clean the oil passages in the crankshaft.
Ensure that all components are clean and free of burrs.
Coat each half of the rod bearing with Lubriplate #105 grease or the equivalent.
Install each bearing half and each shim in the same orientation as each piece was removed. Ensure that the inner contour of the shim does not protrude past the edge of the rod bearing.
When installing the rod bearing housing cap, ensure that the dowel pins that align the cap are seated properly.
Install and properly torque the four bolts. Refer to the Specifications Manual for the proper torque. When properly assembled, the rod bearing housing and the rod bearing assembly
