Remove the valve cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Cover Base - Remove".
Remove the spark plug adapter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Spark Plug Adapter - Remove and Install".
Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Remove two clamps (4) and tube assembly (3) .
Remove bolts (1) and the washers .
Remove tube assembly (5) and adapters (2) .

Remove bolts (9) and the washers .
Remove tube assembly (7) and the adapter. Check the condition of the O-ring seal and the gasket. If the O-ring seal or the gasket are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Remove bolts (8) .
Remove regulator housing (6) . Check the condition of the gasket. If the gasket is worn or damaged, Use a new part for replacement.

Disconnect hose assembly (11) from cylinder head assembly (13) . Plug and cap all openings immediately.
Remove bolts (12) and the washers . Remove lifting bracket (14) .
Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the cylinder head assembly.
Remove bolts (10) from cylinder head assembly.
Remove cylinder head assembly (13) . The weight of cylinder head assembly (13) is approximately 135 kg (300 lb).

Remove cylinder head gasket (15) .

Remove spacer plate (16) and the water ferrules.

Remove spacer plate gasket (17) .Note: A new spacer plate gasket must always be installed when the cylinder head is removed.
