While the differential is still in the vertical position, place retainer (34) for the heel support bearing on the differential housing. Refer to Illustration 75. Use Tooling (B) in order to measure the distance from the surface of retainer (34) to the face of the differential housing. Take a measurement in two locations and average the readings.

Measure the thickness of retainer (34) by using Tooling (C). Take a measurement in two locations and average the readings.
Subtract the distance that was measured in Step 91 from the distance that was measured in Step 90 in order to determine the gap between the housing and the retainer. Subtract 0.05 mm (0.002 inch)from this distance in order to determine the thickness of the shim pack.

Install shims (31) (not shown) that were calculated in Step 92. Install retainer (34) by using bolts (32) and washers. Use Tooling (P) on bolts (32). Torque bolts (32) to 105 20 N m (75 15 lb ft). Torque bolts (32) in a crisscross pattern.
Repeat Step 77 and Step 78 in order to perform a final check of the backlash between the ring gear and the pinion gear. Note: If the backlash is not within the tolerance, proceed to Step 79 in order to attain the proper backlash.

Use the proper driver in order to install the dowels for the lubrication pump to the proper height of 8 1 mm (.32 .04 inch).

Install fitting (30) to the carrier housing. Attach fitting (26) to fitting (30). Connect lube line (27) to fitting (26). Adjust lube line (27) in order to direct lube oil to the toe support bearing. Attach fittings (29) to the carrier housing. Connect lube line (28) to fittings (29).

Install lube fitting (23) to the heel support bearing cup (37). Attach lube line (22) to lube fitting (23). Install bolts (18), washers, and clips (19) to lube line (22).
