Shift Lever
The shift lever is used to select the desired operating speed and direction. Twisting the lever allows the operator to select the desired speed (1-4 forward, 1-3 reverse). Pushing or pulling the lever allows the operator to select the desired direction (forward, neutral or reverse). The shift lever also provides functions such as neutral start and backup alarm.Auto/Manual Switch
The Auto/Manual switch is used to put the control into one of two different operating modes: Automatic or manual. Based on the state of the switch, the machine will respond one of two ways. The manual mode of operation allows the operator to select the desired transmission gear ratio directly from the shift handle. This mode of operation is identical to the standard electric shift machine operation with the exception of the downshift switch which is described later. The manual mode of operation also offers complete system diagnostics. The automatic mode of operation allows the operator to select the highest gear in which the machine is to run. The desired gear is selected by the twist grip speed selector. Automatic shifting is provided in gears at or below the twist grip speed range selector setting.Upshift and downshift points are fixed and are based on machine ground speed. Upshifts are permitted in gears 1, 2, and 3. Downshifts are permitted in gears 4 and 3. Due to the harshness of the shift, the control will not automatically downshift into first gear. (See downshift switch for additional information on downshifting). The operator may, at any time, request a manual downshift by selecting the lower speed with the shift lever. To prevent hunting between gears on a grade, a two second delay disables upshifts immediately after downshifts, and downshifts immediately after upshifts. Consecutive downshifts, or upshifts are permitted without a delay. For example, a downshift from fourth gear to third gear to second gear can occur in less than two seconds if machine speeds are appropriate.Third gear to third gear directional shifts result in a simultaneous downshift and directional shift. The control then allows normal automatic shifting into third gear at the appropriate machine speed. For example, a shift from third gear reverse to third gear forward would result in a shift to second gear forward, and then as the machine speed increases, an upshift to third gear forward. If the operator allows the engine speed to drop below 1500 rpm during a directional shift then the transmission will not downshift before a directional shift. This is to prevent engine stall.Downshift Switch
The downshift switch is used to cause the machine to run at speeds lower than the shift lever speed setting, without actually moving the shift lever. The downshift switch is located on the lift lever. The downshift switch can be used to obtain greater breakout force while loading the bucket in a pile, or to slow the machine while maintaining high engine rpm for greater hydraulic response. This switch functions one of two ways, depending on the state of the auto/manual switch. While running in the manual
