Adjustment Procedure (Off Machine)
1. Put spindle housing (8) on a support (or floor) with the small end up.2. Assemble brake group (7), wheel assembly (1), hub (6) and wheel bearings on spindle housing (8). Lubricate the wheel bearings with oil.3. Install retainer (4) without shims (5). Install three bolts (2) equally spaced, (see illustration) but do not tighten.4. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the top of the retainer to the spindle housing. Measure through three small holes (A) in the retainer. Find the average value of the three measurements. This is the zero reading.5. Torque bolts (2) to 100 14 N m (75 10 lb ft). Turn wheel assembly (1) one revolution. 6. Loosen bolts (2) until retainer (4) is loose. Turn wheel assembly (1) one revolution.7. Use a depth micrometer to again measure the distance from the top of retainer (4) to spindle housing (8). Measure through three small holes (A) in retainer (4). Find the average value of the three measurements.8. Compare the average measurement from Step 7 to the zero reading from Step 4. If the difference is 0.05 mm (.002 in) or less go to Step 10. If the difference is greater than 0.05 mm (.002 in), repeat Steps 5 through 7, then go to Step 9.10. Torque bolts (2) to 25 7 N m (18 5 lb ft).11. Turn the wheel assembly one revolution. Retorque bolts (2) to 25 7 N m (18 5 lb ft).12. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from top of retainer (4) to spindle housing (8). Measure through three small holes in retainer (4). Find the average value of the three measurements.13. Remove bolts (2) and retainer (4) from spindle housing (8).14. Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of retainer (4). Make a measurement at each of the three small holes (A) that were used for the depth measurement. Find the average value of the three measurements.15. Subtract retainer (4) thickness found in Step 14 from the value found in Step 12. This difference is the clearance between the end of spindle housing (8) and retainer (4).16. Add the value 0.15 mm (.006 in) to the value found in Step 15. The result is the correct shim thickness required.17. Install the shim pack (thickness found in Step 16), retainer (4) and bolts (2) to spindle housing (8). Torque bolts (2) to 270 25 N m (200 20 lb ft).Adjustment Procedure (On Machine)
This procedure can be done with the tire and rim installed.1. Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of retainer (4) at each of three small holes (A) used for the depth measurement. Find the average value of the three measurements.2. Assemble wheel assembly (1) and wheel bearings on spindle housing (8). Lubricate wheel bearings.3. Install hub (6) and ring gear (3).4. Install retainer (4) without shims with three bolts (2) equally spaced (see illustration) to spindle housing (8).5. Torque
