Pinion Gear and Housing
(1) Bevel Pinion. (2) Bearing cone. (3) Bearing cup. (4) Housing. (5) Bearing cup. (6) Bearing cone. (7) Washer. (8) Nut. (A) Bolt circle radius.
Note: The same adjustment is used for both the front pinion assembly and for the rear pinion assembly.
Install bearing cups (3) and (5) in housing (4). The bearing cups must be seated against the shoulders in housing (4).
Install bearing cone (2) on pinion (1). Bearing cone (2) must be seated against the shoulder on pinion (1). Lubricate bearing cone (2).
Install pinion (1) in housing (4). Press bearing cone (6) onto the shaft. Allow a small amount of end play to remain. Lubricate bearing cone (6). Lubricate washer (7) and nut (8) and install washer (7) and nut (8). Note: If you freeze the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cups. The limit for freezing the bearing cups is −29°C (−20°F). Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30 gear oil in order to prevent rust on the bearing cups.Note: If you heat the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cones. The limit for heating the bearing cones is a maximum of 135°C (275°F) for a maximum of four hours. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30 gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rust on the bearing cones.

Install Tooling (A) to the end of the pinion shaft.
Slowly rotate the pinion shaft. Check the rolling torque. The proper rolling torque of new bearings is 1.0 N m to 1.7 N m (9 lb in to 15 lb in). Note: Reduce the rolling torque to 0.5 N m to 0.85 N m (4.5 lb in to 7.5 lb in) for machines with more than 100 hours of operation.
Continue to tighten retaining nut (8) until the reading on torque wrench (B) corresponds with the value in Table 2.
Table 2
Pinion Rolling Torque
Actual Torque at the Pinion
New Bearings 1.0 to 1.7 N m (9 to 15 lb in)
Used Bearings 0.5 to 0.85 N m (4.5 to 7.5 lb in) Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (1).
If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (8) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (6) and washer (7) against nut (8). Perform Step 5 and Step 6 again.
When the torque that is needed to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (8). To stake nut (8), peen the collar that is on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (1). See Illustration 5 for the correct
